Google’s AI overviews reinforce some conspiracy theories – new research
QUT researchers found that Google AI Overviews usually challenged the conspiracy theories they tested, but the rebuttals were often shallow. For searches about the less established “15-minute cities” narrative, some summaries presented false claims as one side of a legitimate debate.
The researchers compared Google AI Overviews and conventional search results for queries about chemtrails and 15-minute cities. They found that wording suggesting belief in a conspiracy could produce materially different summaries, although established claims such as chemtrails were usually handled more effectively.
The study is a reminder that a confident search summary is not a final authority. For business decisions or reputation issues, follow the cited sources, compare reliable references and correct misinformation with specific evidence.
