Mozilla’s Firefox Smart Window beta is now powered by Mistral models in France and North America, according to a joint announcement. The companies say the assistant can help with complex searches, retrieve something a user previously clicked away from and work with information from open browser tabs. The United Kingdom and Germany are expected to follow later in 2026; Australia was not included in the announced rollout.
Mistral and Mozilla position the partnership around open technology, regional languages and user control. They say Smart Window conversations are not saved on Mozilla’s servers by default and that partners such as Mistral agree to zero data retention. Those are vendor statements, and organisations should still examine the final product settings and contractual terms before using it with sensitive information.
For Australian businesses, the immediate significance is direction rather than availability. AI is moving into the browser, where it may see more working context than a standalone chatbot. Before enabling a similar tool, decide what information it may access, test whether its answers preserve source context and confirm how administrators can control retention and connected data.
