Foreign AI-generated political content targets Australian audiences

An ABC NEWS Verify investigation traced a YouTube political channel with more than 3 million views to a creator apparently based in Brazil. The channel uses AI-manipulated video and an Australian accent while commenting on local politics. ABC reports that Meta later disabled a related Facebook page for violating its inauthentic-behaviour policy; One Nation said it had no association with the channel.

AI-generated impersonation is no longer limited to obvious scams. ABC NEWS Verify investigated Oceania Unfiltered, a channel whose presenter appears to speak in an Australian accent and comment on Australian politics. The report says AI was used to manipulate the presenter’s face and voice, and the channel accumulated more than 3 million views. Experts consulted by ABC described a reviewed video as a lip-sync deepfake.

The channel frequently promoted One Nation, but a party spokesman told ABC it was not associated with the channel. ABC also found related overseas-run pages and creator groups discussing how to produce Australian-focused content for engagement and advertising revenue. After ABC contacted Meta, the company disabled a related Facebook page for violating its inauthentic-behaviour policy.

For Australian organisations, the practical risk is broader than politics. The same low-cost tools can imitate a founder, spokesperson, customer or brand. Useful controls include monitoring for imitation accounts, documenting official channels, verifying unusual requests through a second contact method and giving staff a clear path to report suspicious content.
